SANDF denies hostage claims in DRC war zone

Date: Feb 27, 2025

The South African (SA) National Defence Force (SANDF) has denied reports by the military union, SANDU, that the soldiers remaining in the DRC's war zone are being held hostage by rebels.

On Tuesday, 127 SANDF soldiers, including four who were critically wounded, arrived in SA. Seven of their colleagues have been released from the hospital after receiving brief special medical treatment.

Last month, 14 SA soldiers were killed in fighting between the M23 rebels and the Congolese military in the town of Goma. The situation in the DRC remains tense as the conflict continues.

SANDF Spokesperson Prince Tshabalala Mahapa emphasised the importance of relying on verified information.

"We really cannot come across people who don't have correct facts. We are relying more on who is mandated to speak. On that basis, we felt that it was important to have accurate information. Because they may argue that they have their members on the ground. But there have been a lot of contradicting stories as well that have emanated and alleged by them. So, we felt that we verified our sources," Mahapa stated.
