ANC NEC to reflect on party’s poor showing at May polls

Date: Aug 2, 2024

The South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting is reflecting on the outcomes of the May 29 election which saw the party dip below 50% for the first time in three decades.

The six-day meeting of the ANC’s highest decision-making body started yesterday in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

The ANC first deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane and the party’s head of elections Mdumiseni Ntuli are expected to report back on the reflections of the elections and what led to the ANC losing its majority forcing it into a government of national unity.

Earlier, the party’s Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the outcomes of the meeting of the NEC would be tabled at its Lekgotla starting on Sunday.

“We will then report to the lekgotla, the work and the decisions of the NEC in the form of this perspective, how this moment is interpreted by the NEC. We will then look at governance, what affects the people and what steps are we going to take, what steps have already been taken to do what we have said we want to do in the manifesto, the cost of living, job creation and the expenditure in terms of the budget, what are we going to do and so on in terms of governance situation in the country,” explains Mokonyane.
