Despite the approval of the White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration, and Refugee Protection by the cabinet, aimed at revamping the nation's migration policies, McKinley argues that the document falls short of addressing the core concerns.
Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi announced the cabinet's endorsement of the white paper, which is intended to modernise the migration system.
However, McKinley points out that the white paper overlooks the real issues plaguing the system.
He emphasises that the lack of essential services promised to citizens, coupled with the influx of immigrants who access these services, sparks competition and conflict within the community.
McKinley asserts that the Department of Home Affairs and the white paper do not tackle the fundamental structural and political factors contributing to this situation.
The critique comes at a time when SA is grappling with migration-related tensions, underscoring the need for a more effective and comprehensive approach to immigration reform.
