Mpofu argued that the public broadcaster's use of the term promotes the political objectives of the GNU, which the MK Party claims is a grand coalition between the Democratic Alliance and the African National Congress.
The case, brought by the Umkhonto we Sizwe Party against the SABC, is currently being heard in the High Court in Johannesburg. The party is seeking a court declaration that the SABC's conduct is unconstitutional and invalid.
Mpofu elaborated on the issue, stating, "The SABC cannot be equated with a private citizen or broadcaster who is entitled to freedom of expression. The SABC is a public broadcaster funded by the taxpayer to provide the highest standards of journalism and fair, unbiased, impartial, and independent news coverage. Whereas a private citizen or broadcaster may freely take political sides and promote party political objectives, a public broadcaster may not use public money to do so."
