Former President calls for national dialogue to envision new SA

Date: Mar 9, 2025

South African (SA) Former President Thabo Mbeki has called for a national dialogue to envision a new SA

This after he conceded that the country is in crisis after 30 years of democracy.

He was delivering the keynote address at the 14th International Women’s Day dialogue hosted by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.

Mbeki has decried the state of the country.

“You can’t avoid the conclusion that the country after 30 years of liberation is in trouble. The economy is in a bad state, I hear about people talking about green shoots. I don’t see them. Levels of unemployment are increasing, levels of poverty are increasing. This issue about the emancipation of women, progress has been made but what kind of progress? Can’t avoid the conclusion that the country is facing very serious challenges and indeed I would say, the mood amongst our people between day one of liberation and April 2024, the mood amongst our people has gone down. So what kind of liberation is this?”
