SA Border Management Authority apprehends over 58 000 illegal entrants during festive season

Date: Jan 31, 2025

The South African (SA) Border Management Authority (BMA) has reported that more than 58 000 individuals attempting to enter the country illegally were detected and apprehended during the festive season operations.

The majority of those apprehended were BaSotho nationals, followed by Zimbabweans and Malawians.

BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato highlighted the significant increase in interceptions compared to the previous festive period.

"The total number of people intercepted to ensure they do not enter the country illegally is 58 394 individuals. This is more than double the number of interceptions compared to the 27 005 of the 2023/2024 festive period. So that on its own you can see the increase that the Minister has attributed to," Masiapato stated.
