The families are appealing to government officials from Equatorial Guinea, who are in attendance at the conference, for clemency and the release of the two. Frik Potgieter, a South African citizen, and Peter Huxham, a dual SA and United Kingdom citizen, were arrested in February last year on drug trafficking charges in Equatorial Guinea just two days after SA courts seized the luxury super yacht belonging to Equatorial Guinea's Vice President.
Shaun Murphy, Spokesperson for the families of the two men told Channel Africa that there he has been in contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), however the feedback that he is getting is that the department is busy with the strategy they have put in place and they're all working on getting the detained engineers out.
“Whether there's been communication between Dirco and Equatorial Guinea, we don't know. Communication and information that has been shared with us has been very limited,” said Murphy.
