‘Our leaders are ganging up to oppress citizens’

Date: May 22, 2025

The state of democracy in East Africa has once again been thrust into the spotlight following the prosecution of Tazania's opposition presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu

Following the arrest of the lawyer and former Member of the National Assembly, Tanzanian police arrested prominent human rights activists from Kenya and Uganda, after they travelled to Dar es Salaam to observe a hearing in the treason case against the leader of the country’s Party for Democracy and Progress (Chadema).

Martha Karua, is a lawyer and a potential candidate for Kenya's 2027 presidential election, and she says the victimisation of activists in appalling.

“All that Tundu Lissu has been incarcerated for, is his call and his party’s call for reforms before elections and in a rally that he addressed, he stated that no reform, no elections. In other words, Chadema was not going to participate in the upcoming elections, if there are no reforms,” Karua said.
