Speaking to the BBC from Washington, DC, where he is currently lobbying the United States government to reverse its decision on aid cuts, Kaseya expressed grave concerns about the potential consequences of these reductions. He stated, “The world is playing with fire. If a pandemic originates from Africa and spreads globally due to these funding cuts, we cannot blame Africa.”
Kaseya highlighted the vital role that international cooperation and financial support have played in containing previous outbreaks of diseases such as Marburg, Mpox, and Ebola. He pointed out that these viruses, if left unchecked, could have spread far beyond the African continent, potentially reaching Western countries.
“The funding and co-operation from the international community were key in controlling these outbreaks,” Dr Kaseya stressed. “Without this support, the situation could have been far worse.”
