Zimbabweans concern over the crackdown on protesters

Date: Apr 1, 2025

Zimbabwean citizens have expressed concern over the crackdown on protesters, after a heavy police presence on Monday, stifled planned mass protests against President Emerson Mnangagwa's bid to extend his rule until 2030.

Mnangagwa, ascended to power in 2017, after Robert Mugabe's ousting, and is in his final term. His former allies- the war veterans, led the calls for demonstrations.

Cleo MaZwangendaba said that protesters faced a brutal push back from government, “We are dealing with a regime that is very brutal, we know their modus operandi, of instilling fear, arresting people on trumped up charges and even using bullets on unarmed citizen.

Remember the 2018/20-election demonstrations, where opposition members were shot dead in cold blood.

So, people stayed in their homes in fear of police. I'm sure they met up in the Central Business District, and it was quite intimidating.
