SA Activist group hails Chief Justice appointment as a milestone

Date: Sep 2, 2024

Activist and Citizens Forum says the appointment of the new Chief Justice Mandisa Maya is an achievement that everyone should celebrate. Maya took over the reins effectively from September 1,2024.

This followed the retirement of her predecessor Raymond Zondo, whose 12-year non-renewable term as a Constitutional Court Justice ended on  August 31, 2024.

Activist and Citizens Forum Spokesperson, Dennis Bloem says Chief Justice Maya should continue to cement the independence of the judiciary. He also wants the new Chief Justice to ensure that the Zondo State Capture Commission report is fully implemented.

“Thirty years ago, it looked impossible to have a woman as the Chief Justice of the country. President Cyril Ramaphosa did not appoint Chief Justice Maya because she is a woman or because of affirmative action, but it is because Chief Justice Maya has proven herself over the years. She is qualified and capable to occupy that office,” Bloem mentions.

A former chairperson of Parliament’s Correctional Services Committee, Bloem testified during the inquiry on corruption allegations of Global African Corporations previously known as BOSASA.

His decision to testify followed the former BOSASA Chief Executive Officer Angelo Agrizzi’s testimony which revealed alleged rampant corruption and bribery at Correctional Services over 14 years.

“We hope that Chief Justice Maya will put more pressure on Parliament to see that realised. Activists and Citizens Forum hope and wish Chief Justice puts the necessary pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa and all those who were fingered in the Zondo Commission report, face the full might of the law,” Bloem states.

“We want to congratulate Chief Justice Maya and wish her the best of luck for the future,” Bloem says.
