Mayor urges SA President to relocate G20 summit to Cape Town

Date: Mar 8, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis has invited President Cyril Ramaphosa to relocate 2025 G20 Leaders Summit to Cape Town.

This follows Ramaphosa’s concerns about the state of Johannesburg during his visits to the city for the G20 meeting.

Hill-Lewis says the Mother City will be able to represent South Africa with pride on the global stage.

“President, you can be assured that Cape Town is ready at any time to host the G20 Leader’s Summit and represent SA with pride on the global stage. Just say the word and we will pull out all the stops to make sure this is a moment of real pride for SA. You can count on Cape Town to perform country duty and host a successful G20 summit.”

Ramaphosa expressed his disappointment at the state of the City of Johannesburg as he met with the city officials.

He says the city is a shadow of its former self and has been turned into darkness by governance failures.

The President described Johannesburg as filthy, with infrastructure vandalised everywhere and portraying a picture of a ghost town.
