‘Pedestrian fatalities on SA roads remain a major concern’

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says pedestrian fatalities on South Africa’s (SA) roads remain a major concern.

This follows an increase in road fatalities during the 2024/2025 festive season, with pedestrians accounting for 41% of the deaths.

A total of 1 502 people died.

Creecy released the Preliminary 2024/2025 Festive Season statistics at a media briefing in Pretoria, Gauteng province on Minday.

She says, “41% of all road fatalities were pedestrians. The highest percentages of pedestrian fatalities were recorded in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, the country’s most populous provinces by vehicle and population. Gauteng province had the highest pedestrian fatalities at 63.84%, followed by Western Cape province with 53.9%, and KwaZulu-Natal province at 44.33%.”
