This comes after the SA Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, gazetted proposed amendments to the ICT sector’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) policy.
The amendments would allow multinational companies to meet empowerment requirements through EEIPs, without adhering to the current 30 percent ownership clause.
The move has sparked speculation about a link to a recent meeting between SA President Cyril Ramaphosa and United States (US) President Donald Trump, where US-based company Starlink was reportedly discussed as a potential partner in crime prevention in SA.
DA Member of Parliament Tsholofelo Bodlani welcomed the development, stating:
“The DA welcomes the move by Minister Malatsi on the proposed amendments to the country’s ICT legislation. The historic lack of political will and failure to amend legislation has delayed our development. This has hindered access to the economy for many South Africans.
“We call on all South Africans to use this opportunity to make their views known and to help ensure that their voices are heard during this historic period.”
