The relationship between SA and the US started to show cracks under the former US ambassador in SA Reuben Brigety. This after he accused Pretoria of arming Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine. It follows the docking of the Lady R in Simons Town Naval Base in December 2022.

An investigation into the matter found that there was no evidence to substantiate the claim that Lady R transported weapons from SA to Russia.

In the latest developments, a senior official has resigned amid the tension between Pretoria and Washington over SA’s  policies.
