According to Dr Chiara Retis, Team Lead for the Violence, Injuries and Disability Unit at WHO Regional Office for Africa, this report highlights challenges and increase in fatality road crashes.
The report attributes the rise to multiple factors, including inadequate road safety laws and standards. However, in the African region “Congo, Cameroon, Burundi and Seychelles have made progress in reducing road accidents by 30%.”
To achieve the United Nations General Assembly target of reducing by half the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by 2030, Retis recommends concerted efforts to implement a range of interventions to strengthen national road safety strategies in Africa like policies that promote sustainable transportation systems, improved legislative road safety frameworks, improved post-crash response, and research tailored to the continent’s unique challenges.
