Africa’s second oldest veterinary school marks centenary graduation milestone

Date: May 15, 2025

The second oldest veterinary school in Africa, located at the University of Pretoria, in the South African province of Gauteng, has celebrated its centenary graduation in the Bachelor of Veterinary Science

The faculty was founded when the then Transvaal University College admitted its first student in 1920.

Dean of the Faculty, Professor Vinny Naidoo says the institution also encourages graduates to get involved in public health and environmental sectors. Naidoo says the graduation is a milestone.

“This is the second oldest veterinary program, so we were training veterinarians from 1920, and this is the 100th graduating class. The profession has made a tremendous impact on the country and just to put it into perspective, it is about food production and food safety, and we are proud of that, being part of a journey of where we are,” Naidoo said.
