SA government embarks on HIV treatment campaign for defaulters

Date: May 17, 2025

The Health Department in South Africa’s (SA) Mpumalanga province has launched the provincial HIV campaign aimed at getting more than 130 000 people on treatment

Different stakeholders have pledge to support the campaign. The province’s Ehlanzeni District is reported to account for the highest number of HIV positive not on treatment. The campaign is aimed at getting people on treatment. Youth Sector Civil Society's Trudy Khumalo says the campaign will include visits to local schools to encourage learners to test for HIV

“So what we going to be doing is conducting door-to-door dialogues, visiting schools and teaching locals about the importance adhering to your treatment and sticking to the prescribed doses. Secondly, we are trying to reach those who are lost in the treatment process, those who tested positive for HIV and have decided to stop their medication for other reason and those who tested positive but never initiated treatment. We are trying to get those people to come back to our facilities, so that they get their treatment,” Khumalo said.
