Kenyan lawyer launches new political party, confirms 2027 presidential run

Date: Jun 13, 2025

Kenyan lawyer, human rights advocate and long-serving opposition leader Martha Karua has unveiled a new political party, declaring her intention to contest the presidency in the country’s 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the launch in Nairobi on Thursday, Karua introduced the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), which she described as a rebranded version of a party originally registered in 2006. The PLP, she said, aims to energise the youth and advance democratic values, social justice and accountability.

“Our goal is simple, to fight, unite and liberate Kenya,” Karua told supporters gathered at the event.

Karua, who previously served as Minister for Justice and was the 2022 presidential running mate to opposition leader Raila Odinga, has consistently criticised President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of stifling dissent and eroding civil liberties.

She indicated plans to form alliances with other opposition leaders who have not joined the president’s broad-based government, emphasising the need for unity among like-minded political actors.

“In places where democratic space is shrinking, it becomes necessary for the opposition to work together to resist repression,” she said.

The PLP is expected to focus on inclusive governance, particularly through youth participation, and offer Kenyans what Karua called a credible and principled alternative ahead of the 2027 vote.

Her declaration sets the stage for what promises to be a dynamic and closely watched political season in Kenya.
