SA Former President hopes new AU leadership will tackle challenges facing Africa

South African (SA) Former President Thabo Mbeki has congratulated the newly elected African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and his Deputy, Ambassador Selma Haddadi.

Mbeki says he hopes that the new leadership will tackle pressing challenges facing the continent.

Youssouf has taken over as Commission chair amidst growing calls for ceasefire in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, dire situation in Sudan and terrorism in the Sahel region.

The Djibouti diplomat has vowed to take the AU to greater heights and be at the center of driving transformation in the continent.

Mbeki says he hopes the new AU leadership will strive for unity and development in the continent.

He adds that the numerous conflicts besetting the continent demand urgent attention and resolution to ensure Africa’s development can truly take off.

The former President says AU chair Youssof and his deputy Haddadi must provide clear, decisive leadership necessary to ensure that the right policies and strategies are implemented for the benefit of all African nations and their people.

Mbeki further says he looks forward to partnering with the AU boss and other key players in promoting the well-being, dignity and progress of all African people.
