Date: May 1, 2025

South Africa's (SA) envoy to the United Nations (UN) told the Security Council that the brutal approach Israel displays in Gaza war leads to the belief that its intentions are consistent with acts of genocide and violations of international laws.

Ambassador Mathu Joyini was addressing the quarterly open debate of on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question at which the Secretary General of the UN Antonio Guterres warned that the promise of a two-state solution risked dwindling to a point of disappearance.

Joyini reiterated South Africa's calls for a return to an immediate permanent ceasefire as an important first step in opening the space for further political dialogue between the parties.

After the Guterres earlier told the Council that the world cannot afford to watch the two-State solution disappear, SA again accused Israel of violating international law, Security Council resolutions and of overtly targeting humanitarian personnel and hindering humanitarian aid into the enclave for almost two months.

This as the UN warns that their stocks are being steadily depleted or have run out entirely leaving more than two million people with severe shortages of food, water, medicine and other essential supplies.
