The resolution, passed on March 25, 2024, has been welcomed by Ramaphosa as an opportunity to establish a solid foundation for a lasting ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations.
"We must seize the opportunity presented by this Security Council Resolution to create a firm foundation for a permanent ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations. We need to stop the carnage and begin walking a path to peace," says Ramaphosa.
He further urged the UNSC to ensure compliance with the resolution, emphasising its binding nature on the involved parties.
Expressing concern over the loss of lives, particularly among children, Ramaphosa reiterated SA's commitment to humanitarian assistance and the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
As Resolution 2728 notes, there is an “urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance and to reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip”.
As tensions persist, the international community looks toward the implementation of Resolution 2728 as a crucial step toward peace and stability in the region.
