SA students at TVET college experiencing challenges

Date: Jan 30, 2024

Students at the Taletso TVET College in Mahikeng in the North West province, South Africa say they are facing challenges that are impacting their ability to study.

Some of the major issues they are currently grappling with include a lack of access to textbooks and class allocation challenges due to over-enrollment.

An affected student at Taletso says she is concerned about the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding.

“The challenge that I have been facing is NSFAS. I don’t live in Mahikeng, I travel from Itsoseng each and every day to come to Mahikeng so imagine always traveling 50 kilometres to come to school, how exhausting it can be; and then NSFAS gave us a short period of time to submit applications for accommodation that’s my only concern.”

“Other challenges include late applications, some courses not having lecturers and delays in the issuing of certificates,” adds the student.
