SA launches ambitious HIV treatment campaign

Date: Feb 25, 2025

On Tuesday, South Africa's (SA) Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, will spearhead the official launch of a groundbreaking HIV treatment campaign.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap by enrolling an additional 1.1 million people living with HIV into treatment by the end of December 2025. This bold campaign is part of the country's ongoing efforts to combat HIV and ensure better health outcomes.

The campaign, which will be launched in collaboration with the SA National AIDS Council (SANAC) and various stakeholders in the health sector, seeks to significantly increase the uptake of life-saving HIV treatment.

The goal is to ensure that 95% of people diagnosed with HIV receive and adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART) to achieve viral suppression.

Foster Mohale, the National Spokesperson for the Health Department, elaborated on the campaign, "The new campaign will be launched in collaboration with the SANAC and other stakeholders in the health sector. It is part of the country’s ongoing interventions to enhance the uptake of life-saving HIV treatment and ensure that 95% of people diagnosed with HIV receive and adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART) to achieve viral suppression. Motsoaledi will be joined by the Deputy Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, leaders of various SANAC sectors, provincial MECs for Health, representatives of development partners and civil society organisations, amongst others."
