Non-disclosure of income to delay 184 000 SA social grant June payments

Date: May 28, 2025

Around 184 000 beneficiaries of the South African (SA) government’s social grants in the KwaZulu-Natal province, may have their benefits delayed in June due to non-disclosure of other income

This, after the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) identified 210 000 people who may be receiving income that they did not disclose. These beneficiaries were identified following SASSA's collaboration with registered credit bureaus.

In accordance with the Social Assistance Act, beneficiaries are legally required to fully disclose all sources of income during initial application and failure to comply, constitutes a violation of this Act. SASSA KwaZulu-Natal Head, Thamo Mzobe says Chatsworth, Phoenix and EThekwini Central are leading the province in terms of alleged fraudsters.

"It's important that time and again we sample the people if indeed they're compliant to all the legislation for them to get grants and this grant is meant for poor people, this grant is meant for people who don't have income. So, once we discover that there is an irregular that has happened for me to get this grant we do justice by asking you to come to us and conduct a review with you to ascertain indeed that you are a person that is eligible for this money. This time around, we sampled one million in the country, 210 000 of whom were confirmed to be in breach of the SASSA Act,” Mzobe said.
