SA prosecutors acknowledge delays in investigations of Apartheid-era crimes

Date: May 21, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, has acknowledged that the prosecution of Apartheid-era crimes has been slow

Various role-players, among others, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and national police appeared before Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development to discuss the implementation of the recommendations of the TRC. The NPA revealed that 194 cases are currently being investigated.

Members of Parliament have expressed concern that cases take too long to be finalized, with Batohi acknowledging that a number of factors had complicated matters.

“I agree, there were many, many delays, that could have been avoided, but in past 5 years we have done all we can to ensure that things move as fast as can. Of course we understand suspects are dying, families are dying, understand want families to have closure, but cases are very complicated (and we) can’t get evidence as quickly,” Batohi said.
