SA Minister to brief media on key issues facing SA’s public health sector

Date: Apr 10, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, together with provincial Members of the Executive Council responsible for health, is expected to brief the media today in Pretoria, Gauteng province.

The briefing will provide updates on various health-related matters, including the procurement and recruitment of health professionals such as doctors.

Motsoaledi  is also expected to address the announcement of new Ministerial Advisory Committees and provide updates on the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).

The country’s public health sector appears to be under immense pressure, with numerous matters taken to court many of which the department has lost. Among them is the Universal Health Coverage plan, known as the NHI, which SA is attempting to implement.

The law is currently facing a series of legal challenges, with critics expressing serious doubt over its viability. “Critics believe the NHI will never see the light of day due to its complex legal and logistical hurdles,” said a Senior Health Official.
