Mutharika, aged 84, who previously governed the nation from 2014 to 2020, has committed to revitalising the Malawian economy, which has been battling sluggish growth rates and persistent currency deficits.
The veteran politician is set to compete against the current President Lazarus Chakwera, who is vying for re-election.
Mutharika's candidacy was unanimously endorsed during a DPP convention held in Blantyre, where delegates from across the country convened to elect new members to the party's national governing council.
Despite opening the floor for potential challengers, Mutharika remained unopposed, signalling strong internal support within the DPP.
Additionally, Mutharika has expressed intentions to form alliances with the United Transformation Movement and other political entities to strengthen his campaign, although formal confirmations of such partnerships are still pending.
Oliver Nakoma, DPP's Shadow MP for Chiradzulu Midima Constituency, emphasised the democratic process within the party, noting that while Mutharika's endorsement was expected, the opportunity for others to contest was transparently offered.
