SA leading political party elects new city Mayor

Africa National Congress’s (ANC) Dada Morero has been voted in as the new City of Johannesburg (COJ) Mayor. This follows the resignation of Kabelo Gwamanda of the Al Jama-ah party on Tuesday.

Two Councillors were nominated for the position.

Five parties, the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters, Patriotic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party and African Transformation Movement nominated Morero, while the Democratic Alliance fielded its caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku.

Just before the voting, Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse’s Wayne Duvenhage weighed in on Morero being the leading candidate to take up the position of mayor.

Morero received an overwhelming 189 votes while Kayser-Echeozonjoku received 60 votes. Morero had a stint as Mayor in 2022

Speaker of the council, Margaret Arnolds announced the results.

“The total valid votes were 249. It was one cancelled ballot and all the party agents signed the results are as follows: Councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku is 60 and Councillor Enoch Morero is 189. Sello Enoch Morero is the elected Mayor of COJ. “
