SA school hosts electrical safety campaign ahead of International Children’s Day

Date: May 30, 2025

As International Children’s Day approaches on June 1, attention in South Africa (SA) is turning to the safety of young people, especially those living in high-risk environments.

This week, Umthambeka Primary School in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg, hosted an electrical safety awareness campaign led by Hisense SA. The company, which operates a service centre nearby, provided real-life demonstrations to help learners understand the dangers of electricity, particularly during winter, when unsafe heating methods are often used.

“We’re part of this community,” said Luna Nortje, Deputy General Manager at Hisense SA. “It may seem small, but it matters. We want to make a difference where we can.”

The school was selected due to its location and the needs of its learners, many of whom come from informal settlements.

“Most of our learners live in shacks,” said Acting Principal Jerry Mohlake. “This campaign helps them become more aware of electrical dangers and how to respond.”

For the children, the message landed. One learner said simply: “Electricity is very dangerous. You can get hurt or die.”

The campaign highlights the importance of safety education and community partnerships in protecting SA’s youth.
