Zambia grapples with water pollution crisis following acid spillage

Date: Feb 27, 2025

Zambia is currently facing a severe water pollution crisis following an acid spillage from a Chinese-owned mine. On February 18, a tailings dam at the mine broke, releasing contaminated water into the Kafue River.

The acid pollution has since travelled 200 kilometres, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Thousands of fish and other aquatic organisms have been found dead, and the affected areas have reported significant damage to fields, soil contamination, and disruption of water supply.

The Zambian government has expressed deep concern over the ongoing pollution and has vowed to hold the responsible mining company accountable. Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, has called for stricter oversight of storage facilities, including tailings dams, to prevent future incidents.
