Namibia media union slams electoral body for suppression

Date: Nov 29, 2024

The Namibia Media Professionals' Union (NAMPU) has strongly criticised the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) for what it describes as a blatant disregard for accountability and media freedom during the ongoing electoral process.

In a statement issued this NAMPU condemned the ECN's decision to call off a scheduled press briefing on Wednesday evening, only to proceed with a private interview with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).

The press briefing, initially set for 20H00 CAT, was cancelled 20 minutes after being announced, excluding other media outlets.

NAMPU has described this incident as a clear violation of transparency and public trust, stating it further undermines confidence in both the ECN and NBC, which operate under state influence. The union pointed out that the ECN had committed to addressing an issue with voter registration numbers but failed to follow through.

According to NAMPU, the decision to exclude media from this critical event deprived the public of essential information during a pivotal moment, thereby weakening the democratic process.
