Elections by Uganda's ruling NRM party disrupted following electoral irregularities

Date: May 9, 2025

Uganda's ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party's village elections in Kabale municipality, were disrupted by widespread electoral irregularities and chaos at multiple polling stations.

Analysts say the reported incidents highlighted deep-rooted concerns about transparency, voter verification and party membership integrity during the NRM's internal electoral process. Uganda is set to hold general elections next year, with President Yoweri Museveni looking to extend his 40-year rule.

Channel Africa Correspondent in Uganda, Mike Arereng says one of the issues was the alleged involvement of foreign nationals.
“Elections were cancelled in various villages, bordering Kenya, after a number of reported incidents of Kenyans crossing the border to participate in the vote,” Arereng said.
