SADC calls for an extraordinary summit amid Mozambique violence

Date: Nov 8, 2024

Southern African Development Community (SADC) has called for an extraordinary summit following escalating violence in Mozambique.

By Michael Mdluli

The summit will take place on November 16.

Operations at the Lebombo port of entry at the border between South Africa and Mozambique remain suspended.

The ongoing violent post-election protests in Mozambique have led to the suspension of operations at the border post.

Business owners in Komatipoort say they are losing money.

Opposition parties in Mozambique have denounced the results of last month’s election results.

Mpumalanga Community Safety and Security Member of the Executive Council Jackie Macie says the additional security officers will ensure the safety of trucks stuck along the N4 toll road heading to the border.

“We have already deployed our multi-disciplinary task team here at the borderline and along the N4 road. It is a 24-hour deployment that we have carried out already. So, I can assure the truck drivers and all our road users on the N4 line from Komatipoort coming to Lebombo Border Post that their safety is guaranteed,” says Macie.
