The industry has come under the spotlight following the recent alleged illegal operations related to the training of 95 Libyans on a farm outside White River.
A private security company conducted the training. Burger says oversight can be strengthened through the amendment of legislation.
“Perhaps one of the areas that should be looked at again is the PSIR Act. For example, Section 33 of the Act provides for inspections of security service providers that an inspector may carry out an inspection. This means there is no obligation to do so, and I think this is at least one aspect of the PSIR Act that should change. The existence of this illegal military camp is in many ways a wake-up call with regards to the ability of detection of such high-risk activities within our borders and our ability to react to them appropriately.”
