The Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government is set to discuss strategies to de-escalate tensions in eastern DRC and assess the future of SADC’s military operation in the region.
The summit host, Zimbabwe, has voiced concerns that the worsening crisis could destabilise the member states.
The SADC military mission, deployed in 2023, suffered heavy losses last week, with around a dozen soldiers from South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania killed as rebels seized control of Goma.
Meanwhile, Rwanda which is not a SADC member has called for an end to the mission, labeling the troops a belligerent force rather than a peacekeeping operation.
