Dankarami, who was believed to be a key figure in the criminal network, was reportedly second-in-command to an Islamic State-linked leader.
The operation, which took place on Friday, targeted Dankarami’s hideout in the Munumu Forest, where he had been hiding. In addition to eliminating the gang members, authorities reported that several other criminal hideouts were destroyed across the state as part of the action.
This operation comes on the heels of a deadly raid earlier this week in Maigora, a village in Katsina State, where bandits kidnapped 43 villagers and killed four others. The military’s latest success is being seen as part of a broader push to dismantle bandit networks that have plagued the region.
The death of Dankarami is expected to deal a significant blow to bandit operations in the area, though authorities remain vigilant in their ongoing efforts to address the security challenges facing north-west Nigeria.
