Mandisa Maya to lead SA's judiciary as Chief Justice

Date: Jul 27, 2024

Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya is poised to ascend to the highest judicial office in South Africa, becoming the Chief Justice from September 1.

This historic appointment is the culmination of a thorough consultation process led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, involving the Judicial Service Commission and the leaders of political parties within the National Assembly, in strict adherence to the nation's Constitutional mandates.

President Ramaphosa's decision is seen as a significant step towards judicial transformation, aligning with the constitutional vision set forth three decades ago.

The appointment of Justice Maya arrives at a pivotal moment for South Africa, as the nation grapples with the ongoing process of transformation within its debt structures.

Reflecting on the progress made since the constitution's enactment, the country has witnessed a remarkable increase in female representation within the judiciary, with numerous courts now presided over by women.

This shift not only fulfils a long-standing demand for gender parity in leadership roles but also underscores the invaluable contributions of women in the legal domain.

Nkosana Mvundlela, President of the Black Lawyers Association, lauded the appointment, noting that Justice Maya's leadership is expected to bring forth the much-needed perspective and drive further advancements in the country's pursuit of transformation and equality within the judiciary.

Her tenure is anticipated to be a testament to the strides made in empowering women in the legal field and a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
