Last week’s snowfall affected parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Eastern Cape provinces.
It led to extreme cold weather were one person died and caused massive traffic jams due to the closure of major highways.
Briefing the media in Pretoria today, SAWS’s Dr Christine Engelbrecht says, “It is not rare, however, snow in October is not that frequent. For example in September 21, 2008, road closures occurred in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, due to snowfall. I think this recent event coincides with the long weekend, but I must say, the depth of the snow is more or less in some areas up to 80cm of snow.”
