Date: May 20, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Nelson Mandela University based in Gqeberha in Eastern Cape province is marking Africa Day with a series of lectures and cultural exhibition.

The annual Africa Day is a celebration of the founding of the African Union and a call to deepen unity and solidarity across the continent.

The university began the week long series of lectures and symposiums with a focus on Geopolitics and Pan-Africanism.

This year's theme is "Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations". Keynote Speaker in the opening ceremony for the week long programme, SA Human Rights Commissioner, Professor Tshepo Madlingozi says the country has failed with the process of reparations, “The fact of the matter is that in south Africa we have not done the work of reparations. We haven't colleagues.

The African Union talks about a framework of reparations. Let's start with their definition of reparation- and I will quote from the concept notes of this field- reparation must be adequate, must be effective, must be prompt and should be proportional to the gravity of the violation.”
