Concerns raised over skyrocketing kidnapping cases in SA malls

Date: Jun 20, 2025

A ward councillor in Jabulani township, in the South African city of Johannesburg has expresses concern over the high number of kidnapping cases reported in the area

Dumisani Modladlaba says kidnappings have become a crisis in his area, with a hive of activity around the local Jabulani Mall, attracting criminal elements that have seen patrons targeted by kidnappers.

Modladlaba says the recent trend targets residents who frequent the mall, work or any destination using e-hailing services. Modladlaba has also raised concerns over parents who allow children to use e-hailing services without guardians.

Recent police data indicates that between January and March this year, the local Jabulani police station saw 47 kidnapping cases, 15 cases up from the same period last year.
