Deployment in DRC a collective budget of SADC countries: SA Defence Minister

Date: May 4, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Defence Minister Angie Motshekga says the budget which was spent on the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) mission in the eastern DRC, comes from the Southern African Development Community.

She says SANDF is in the DRC under the SADC mission and not SA individually.

However, a decision was taken by SADC and East African Community regional bodies to withdraw the troops with the aim of finding peace in that country.

Addressing the media in Pretoria, Motshekga says South Africa also contributed as a member country.

"The financing of SAMIDRC comes from the 16 countries that make SADC. From there when they have worked out figures, they will tell us what is supposed to be our contribution as a country based on the 16 countries' contributions which are determined in a different formula so we still get our figure from the SADC secretariat.”
