Zimbabwe ruling party announces plans to rename provinces to erase colonial legacies

Date: Jan 22, 2025

Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU-PF, has announced plans to rename the country’s provinces as part of efforts to eradicate colonial legacies and foster national unity.

The resolution, adopted at the party's 21st annual National People’s Conference, seeks to replace names imposed during the colonial era with indigenous ones, reflecting Zimbabwe's heritage and identity.

The party argues that colonial-era names perpetuate division and an inflated sense of superiority associated with the former colonisers while undermining African self-worth. ZANU-PF views the renaming initiative as a step towards reclaiming the nation’s history and reinforcing a sense of autonomy and pride among Zimbabweans.

While the move has been welcomed by historians and cultural commentators as a necessary measure to heal historical wounds, it has also sparked debate. Some stakeholders in Zimbabwe and the diaspora have criticised the timing of the initiative, arguing that the government should focus on pressing issues such as improving healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

ZANU-PF expects the resolution to be implemented swiftly, with various government departments and agencies tasked with overseeing the renaming process.
