Date: Oct 22, 2024

About 400 Grade 12 learners in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa are unable to sit for their exams on the second day due to inclement weather in the area.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says because of storms in certain areas in Gqeberha, a decision was taken to halt the writing of the National Senior Certificate by the affected learners.

Gwarube says, “We usually have the South African Defence Force on standby in certain situations, whether it is too early for our learners to be on the exam venues may be due to protest actions. But a decision was made this time because regardless of the fact that they would have been transported to the schools but because of the storm damage to the power lines they will not be able to write their exams in a fair manner today in Gqeberha. This is affecting about four hundred learners.”
