SA Police Service Crime Intelligence arrests could erode public trust: Union

Date: Jul 1, 2025

The Independent Policing Union of South Africa (SA) (IPUSA) has voiced deep concern over the recent arrests of senior police officials, including Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, head of the SA Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence Unit.

The officials are facing allegations related to the unlawful appointment of senior staff within the police force.

The arrests, which took place last week at OR Tambo International Airport, have triggered widespread public debate and questions about the credibility and accountability of SAPS leadership.

IPUSA President Bethuel Nkuna warned that the developments could severely impact the effectiveness of law enforcement in the country.

“These kinds of arrests are weakening all law enforcement efforts and also diminishing the public’s confidence in the police,” Nkuna said. “We call out the powers that be to root out all forms of corruption.”

The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that Khumalo and six of his colleagues are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, but has so far withheld details on the charges and the exact nature of the alleged misconduct.

Nkuna reiterated the union’s stance that corruption, regardless of rank, must be addressed decisively, but cautioned that instability at the top could undermine ongoing efforts to restore law and order in the country.
