Additionally, the continent has the highest murder rates globally.
This week, AU unveiled a pivotal resource aimed at reducing gun violence across Africa. The “Silence the Guns in Africa Activism Guide,” created by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in partnership with Gun Free South Africa (SA) and the Mobilising Men for Feminist Peace Initiative, is designed to assist activists in addressing the growing gun crisis on the continent.
In a conversation with Claire Taylor, a researcher at Gun Free SA and the author of the Guide, we learn that this initiative comes at a critical time. "Africa is the only region where gun violence has continued to increase over the past decade, and we have the highest murder rates globally. Most of these killings are perpetrated by young men, with women and children also falling victim," said Taylor. She explained that while the AU’s ‘Silence the Guns’ campaign is a step forward, more concrete action is needed to tackle the root causes of gun violence.
The guide, which has been welcomed by numerous activist networks, is divided into three parts. The first addresses the alarming situation of guns in Africa, highlighting gun violence, illegal trade, and the socio-economic factors driving demand for firearms. The second section delves into the AU’s efforts to silence guns and outlines key stakeholders, while the third offers over 40 practical activism strategies that range from partnerships with governments to holding them accountable for inaction.
Taylor pointed out that one of the major drivers of gun violence is media portrayal, which glamorises guns and influences public perception. She also stressed that reducing gun availability could prevent significant harm, citing examples of successful international efforts, including in the Balkans.
Taylor encourages local communities to get involved, noting that simple actions, such as creating gun-free zones, can have a powerful impact on safety.
