Participating in a mini-plenary session in parliament, MK member of parliament Nathi Nxumalo argued that such settlements undermine efforts to build a non-racial and unified nation.
“These communities spit in the face of non-racialism, weaken national unity, and make a mockery of social cohesion,” Nxumalo said. “Their very existence sends a message to the majority of South Africans that they are unwelcome, that their dignity and freedom are conditional.”
Orania and Kleinfontein have long attracted public scrutiny for maintaining strict cultural entry requirements, primarily accommodating Afrikaners and promoting Afrikaans heritage. While supporters argue that these towns preserve cultural autonomy, critics contend that they are exclusionary and out of step with constitutional values.
Nxumalo dismissed claims that the MK party’s stance is driven by political point-scoring.
“This is not a populist posture,” he stated. “We approach this issue as disciplined revolutionaries, guided by the constitution, to root out racism in all its forms.”
The discussion comes amid renewed national reflection on the pace of transformation and social integration more than 30 years after the end of apartheid.
