SA commemorates 31 years of freedom

Date: Apr 27, 2025

Today marks South Africa's (SA) Freedom Day, commemorating the country's first democratic election in 1994.

It signaled the end of apartheid, as millions of non-white citizens were able to vote for the first time.

Now, 31 years into its freedom and democracy, the government says this year's theme, "United in Resilience," highlights the nation's strength in protecting the hard-won freedoms enjoyed today.

The national celebrations will take place at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Mpumalanga province.
