Glimmer of hope in resolving DRC crisis: UN official

Date: Sep 11, 2024

The Head of United Nations (UN) Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix says he sees more than a glimmer of hope in the resolution of the security crisis affecting the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Lacroix singled out “a credible and active political process” that is working alongside peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission (MONUSCO) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force, as the catalyst to bringing the drawn out conflict to an end.

“I see more than a glimmer of hope, because we have on the one hand a very credible and active and diplomatic process, which is supported by SADC and particularly Angola which is leading the diplomatic efforts. And at the same time we also have SADC's strong involvement with the deployment of the SADC force in the DRC and the diplomatic process. They are complementary to one another. There was a clear understanding with SADC member States high officials. Those two are complementary,” Lacroix said.
