SA Police Commissioner confirms arrest of six suspects in AKA murder case

Date: Feb 28, 2024

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the top cop in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal’s province has provided details on how, when, and why six murder suspects linked to the killing of rapper AKA were apprehended.

The first arrest occurred as early as April 2023, following the tragic incident that claimed AKA's life.

AKA, whose real name is Kiernan Forbes, was gunned down at close range outside the Wish restaurant on Durban’s Florida Road on February 10, 2023. His friend, Tibz(real name Tebello Motsoane), was also caught in the line of fire during the same attack.

According to Mkhwanazi, police initially planned to shoot AKA while he was inside a minibus he was traveling in. However, they ran out of patience because he was taking too long, as he hugged and greeted Tibz outside the restaurant.

The hit was carried out by young men, with the oldest among the six suspects being just 36 years old.

The arrests were made strategically. Police identified six suspects involved in parallel cases related to the murder and decided to keep them in custody without charging them directly for AKA's killing.

The sixth suspect, described as the "coordinator of the hitmen," played a crucial role in organising resources for the team and ensuring their rewards after completing their mission.

Mkhwanazi emphasised that AKA was the main target. He explained that AKA was followed from King Shaka International Airport to his hotel and then to the Florida Road restaurant where he was ultimately shot. The alleged organiser of firearms and vehicles was the first suspect arrested in April last year .
